Monyash is a small, peaceful village at the geographic centre of the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park. If you’re looking for a short break to ‘Escape the Everyday’, then Sheldon House and Barn provide a base to discover, explore and enjoy yourself. The limestone area is scattered with footpaths for walks of anything from a mile or so to a day’s ramble, such as along Lathkill Dale nature reserve and a designated SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), all straight from the door. Long distance walks such as the Limestone Way, the Peak Pilgrimage and others pass Sheldon House, making it an ideal overnight stop. Cycling can be off-road along old railway trails, including the nearby Tissington, High Peak and Monsal trails, or on quiet road routes.
If observing the natural world is more to your taste, then the night sky away from the urban lighting shows the myriads of stars more clearly. Buzzards fly over the fields hunting for prey, or perch on fence posts, while a barn owl can sometimes be seen swooping low over the adjoining fields at dusk. Our ancient hawthorn tree is one of the oldest of its kind and was possibly an old village boundary marker in past days.
Having discovered and explored the surroundings of the village and local area, why not treat yourself to a stay in our 18th century listed building which, nevertheless, has modern comforts like Wi-Fi and hot water; as well as home cooked food using local produce and served with a very warm welcome. Our award winning local pub just 5 minutes’ walk away has a large beer garden and a varied menu – and a log fire in winter. Other places to eat, all within about 20 minutes or so drive from Sheldon House, can be found here.
There are many attractions within easy reach, including several for children, such as Hathersage open air swimming pool, the Peak Railway, or the Boggart Trail on The Longshaw Estate. Bakewell, Buxton Spa Town and Opera House, Ashbourne, Haddon Hall, Chatsworth House, Ilam Park, Eyam Plague Village, Dovedale and Carsington Water are all within half an hour’s drive (or a slightly longer bike ride!)
A bit farther afield are Peak Wildlife Park at Leek (30 minutes); Alton Towers (40 mins); the Potteries in Stoke-on-Trent (1 hour); the Heights of Abraham, Gulliver’s Kingdom and Matlock Farm Park, at Matlock (30 mins); the Blue John, Treak Cliff and other Caverns at Castleton (30 mins); Edale and the Kinder Scout National Nature Reserve (45 mins) - and lots of other opportunities to enjoy the beauty and attractions of this part of the country.
